“Modesto police on Saturday afternoon arrested two women suspected of falsely collecting donations for funeral costs for a deceased baby. They couldn’t verify their story when questioned by officers.

Tiffany Lyon, 27, of Modesto and Chasity Doll, 20, of Sun City were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud the public taking money under false pretense and lying to police about their identities, said police Sgt. Craig Gundlach.

The women were standing in the roadway near Vintage Faire Mall, stalling traffic as drivers slowed to give them money. Gundlach said the women had a sign with a photo of a baby, and Lyon was claiming the child had been hers. When questioned by police, the women did not know the baby’s birth date or date of death.

Coroner’s officials confirmed Lyon did not have a deceased child. The women were carrying a purse with about $640 in cash. Police said there are organizations that will help families with funeral costs.”

This is exactly why I never give panhandlers money. They will either give it to their pimp, buy drugs, or in this case… Just stick it in their pocket.

I’ve gotta give them credit though. They sure came up with a good scam. Raising money for a dead babies funeral is really emotional for some people. It’s shocking though that so many people would fall for the scam. It seems like such a bazaar reason to panhandle.

I guess some people will fall for anything.
